CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. — Sept. 29, 2026 — Carmel Guitar Society will present GRAMMY Award-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux on Friday, Oct. 23, at Founders Theatre in Carmel-by-the-Sea, bringing one of the world's leading classical guitarists to the Monterey peninsula just weeks after the release of his deeply personal new album, Gratitude.
The concert marks the finale of Carmel Guitar Society's 2026 concert series and the nonprofit's first presentation at Founders Theatre, the 290-seat auditorium at the historic Golden Bough Playhouse. The venue reopened in 2024 following an extensive renovation that brought state-of-the-art lighting, accessibility improvements and other upgrades to one of Carmel's long-standing performing arts spaces.
Praised by NPR as "perhaps the most precise and soulful classical guitarist of his generation," Vieaux has built an international career distinguished by technical command, expressive range and the ability to connect classical guitar with audiences well beyond the traditional concert hall.
His Carmel appearance follows the Sept. 18 release of Gratitude on Azica Records, Vieaux's 10th solo album and his first devoted entirely to his own compositions. The recording features music written between 2016 and 2026, including Tidal Pools, Home, Elegy, the six-part December Etudes and the title work, Gratitude.
Vieaux has described the album as an especially personal project, shaped by significant changes in his life and by years of musical ideas that finally found their way onto the page. The result gives Carmel audiences a chance to hear another dimension of an artist long recognized as both a master interpreter and performer.
A winner of the 2015 GRAMMY Award for Best Classical Instrument Solo for his album, Play, Vieaux has appeared at major venues and with orchestras worldwide. His career has included performances at Lincoln Center, Absterdam's Concertgebouw and Seoul Arts Center, along with collaborations spanning classical, contemporary and crossover repertoire.
The New York Times has described his playing as "virtuosic, flamboyant, dashing and, sometimes, ineffably lyrical."
In addition to his performing and recording career, Vieaux is a longtime educator. He co-founded the guitar department at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2011 and has taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music for more than 25 years. His online guitar school through ArtistWorks also reaches students internationally.
For Carmel Guitar Society, the Oct. 23 concert brings together several elements central to the nonprofit mission: presenting exceptional artists, expanding access to live performance and music education, and supporting a vibrant arts community in Monterey County. The 2026 concert series brought nationally and internationally recognized guitarists to Monterey County throughout the year. The season now concludes in one of Carmel's revitalized cultural landmarks, pairing the intimate nature of classical guitar with a theater designed to bring performers and audiences close together.
